We made it out of the U.P. today. We stopped in Mackinaw City at the Hamilton Inn Select. It's the nicest hotel we've stayed in yet. There's a jacuzzi in the room which we plan on trying out. The girls had fun playing down at the park by the bridge. We ate at Bob's Big Boy for dinner. The lighthouse in the picture was at Manistique, MI on Lake Michigan. This hotel is on Lake Huron. These lakes are great.

If you head towards Traverse City, wave "Hi" to my sister!
I love the light house! It looks coooolllldddd there. It got up to 90 degrees today here in Phoenix. :-)
The two lighthouse photos at the bottom show Old Mackinac Point Light in Mackinaw City. You can see the Mackinac Bridge in the background. For 30 years I owned a cottage a half mile west of the Light. I have tape recordings of the fog horn with its unique musical sound. Summer visitors who used to pitch their tents and park their trailers in the light house area didn't enjoy the sound as much as I, however.
The one at the bottom is indeed in Mackinaw City. The one at the top was on Lake Michigan in Manistique. We didn't hear the horn. I guess it only sounds when it's foggy. Or it could be that the straight was iced over and there weren't any boats anyway.
Jim, you didn't hear the foghorn because it has been silent for 50 years. The Lighthouse went out of service upon completion of the Mackinac Bridge. When it was a Museum, a continous tape player let visitors hear my foghorn recording. After the Museum was closed during renovation, the tape player ended up at the home of a friend. Now, the Lighthouse is, or soon will be, a Museum again.
Before the Bridge was built, the area between the Lighthouse and the nearby Fort was a well populated campground peopled with hay fever escapees. Having water on three sides, Mackinaw City is almost pollen free and has been a haven for allergy sufferers since the early 1900's.
